Justice Grewal is a former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ recommendation.

He succeeded Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, who completed his tenure earlier in 2026.

The appointment gained attention because NCLT Presidents are usually retired Chief Justices of High Courts. Justice Grewal became the first senior puisne High Court judge appointed to the post.

The Delhi High Court recently disposed of a petition challenging the acting NCLT President’s appointment after the Centre announced Justice Grewal’s full-time appointment.

NCLT is a quasi-judicial body established under the Companies Act, 2013. It adjudicates corporate disputes, insolvency proceedings, mergers, oppression, mismanagement, and liquidation matters.

NCLT also functions as the adjudicating authority under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016. It plays a central role in India’s corporate insolvency resolution framework.

Appeals against NCLT orders are heard by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). Further appeals can be filed before the Supreme Court on questions of law.

Justice Grewal started legal practice in 1992 at Punjab and Haryana High Court. He earlier served as Additional Advocate General for Punjab before elevation to the High Court bench.
