WHAT IS A CYBERCRIME ?

The growing use of internet has made life much easier than before. It is making the world come closer. However, it has also managed to create another problem for people who spend long hours in the cyber world - which is cyber crime.

Cybercrime is a crime that involves a computer and a network. In some cases, computer is used to commit crime whereas in other cases, it is used as a victim of such crime.

WHO ARE INVOLVED IN CYBERCRIME ?

Earlier, cyber crime was committed by individuals or a small group of individuals, but today, there is a very complex network of cyber criminals spread all around the world. They all are indulged in different types of crime, like - hacking, theft, cyber stalking etc.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CYBERCRIME ?

Cybercrime can be broadly classified into the types - Hacking, Theft, Cyber Stalking.

Hacking is a type of crime in which a user's computer is accessed by the hackers so that his personal or sensitive information can be accessed. In hacking, the criminals use a variety of softwares to enter a user's computer without the victim being aware that his computer is being accessed remotely.

Theft is another type of crime, in which criminals violate the copyrights and downloads music, movies, games and softwares. There are many torrent websites which provide free download of music, movies, games etc. However, the internet giant, Google has taken big measures to block those websites which are violating copyrights.

Cyberstalking is the use of internet to harass an individual or an organisation. In general cases, criminals involved in cyber stalking, personally know their victim. And to hide identity they use internet to monitor and harass an individual to obtain financial information of victim.

HOW TO CONTROL OR PREVENT CYBER CRIME ?

The victim of cybercrime is very badly affected. Hence, to control and prevent this crime, cyber experts say that -

Firewall - Users should use a firewall to protect their computer. Many softwares come with firewall which should be turned on for safety.

Antivirus - It is recommended that users should purchase and install an antivirus, to clean up viruses of found on the computer.

Secure Payment - Online shopping must be done at a secure connection. Users should never give their credit card details to a suspicious website.

Parental Control - It is also suggested that parents should monitor how their children use computer. They must install parental control to limit the reach of their children on internet.

Password - Users are also suggested to regularly update their password.  They should use combination of letters and numbers making it very difficult for cyber criminals to guess.
