The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved a ₹10,200 crore order for ammunition for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system. The project involves procuring two types of ammunition for the Indian Army. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
Two contracts are set to be signed by March 31—a ₹5,700 crore deal for high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition and a ₹4,500 crore deal for area denial munitions.
These orders will equip the 10 existing Pinaka regiments, with plans for additional regiments in the future.
Developed by DRDO, the Pinaka rocket system currently has a range of up to 75 km, with future upgrades planned to extend it to 120 km and eventually 300 km.
