India signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s state-owned Rosoboronexport (RoE) on Friday to procure 1,000 HP engines for its T-72 tank fleet. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
The agreement includes a technology transfer for licensed production at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi.
Currently, the Russian-origin T-72 tanks, which form the backbone of the Army’s armored fleet, are equipped with 780 HP engines.
The Army operates 2,400 T-72 tanks alongside 1,300 of the planned 1,657 T-90S ‘Bhishma’ tanks, produced under a Russian license at the Heavy Vehicles Factory.
Additionally, the Army is inducting 118 indigenous Arjun Mark-1A tanks worth Rs 7,523 crore, adding to the 124 Arjun tanks introduced over a decade ago.
Furthermore, under Project Zorawar, 354 indigenous light tanks designed for high-altitude warfare will be inducted at a cost of around Rs 17,500 crore.
