In the icy heights of north Sikkim, 23-year-old Lt Shashank Tiwari made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life to save a fellow soldier during an operational patrol on Thursday. Lt. Shashank Tiwari Picture
Commissioned less than six months ago into the Sikkim Scouts—a specialized regiment trained for mountain warfare—Lt Tiwari was leading a patrol towards a key tactical post.
Around 11 a.m., Agniveer Stephan Subba lost his balance while crossing a narrow log bridge and was swept away by a fierce mountain stream.
Without a second thought, Lt Tiwari leapt into the gushing waters. His instinct, courage, and unshakable sense of duty propelled him into danger. Naik Pukar Katel followed instantly, and together, they reached the drowning Agniveer and pulled him to safety.
But in that selfless act, Lt Tiwari was swept away by the powerful current.
Despite the patrol’s frantic efforts, his body was found 800 metres downstream just half an hour later.
Lt Shashank Tiwari’s bravery reflects the highest ideals of the Indian Army—courage, sacrifice, and putting others before self. India mourns a hero who lived and died for his comrades.
