[GK Facts] Himachal Pradesh Becomes Fourth Fully Literate State

Since 1967, the annual celebrations of International Literacy Day (ILD) have taken place on 8 September.


On May 20, 2025, Mizoram became the first fully literate state in India. Ladakh has become the first Union Territory to be fully literate.


Important Facts Related to Himachal Pradesh


The Chief Commissioner’s province of HP came into being on 15th April 1948.


After recommendation of the State Reorganisation Commission, HP became a Union Territory on 1st November 1956.


On 18th December 1970 the State of HP Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25th January 1971. Himachal Pradesh emerged as the 18th state of the Indian Union.


Himachal Pradesh stands on the 17th rank in terms of the area occupied by states in India.


Yashwant Singh Parmar from Congress has served as the First Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.


Himachal Pradesh shares its borders with the Indian union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.


Himachal Pradesh has five rivers: the Ravi, the Beas, the Chenab, the Yamuna, and the Sutlej.


The highest peak in the Himachal Pradesh is 6820 meters in altitude, known as Reo Purgyil.


The toy trains that connect Kalka and Shimla have been added to the UNESCO Heritage site because of the narrow gauge track.


There are 5 National Parks, 3 Ramsar Sites, and more than 25 Wildlife Sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh.

Great Himalayan National Park is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Himachal Pradesh.


Himachal Pradesh has threeRamsar Sites of International Importance,” namely Pong Dam, Renuka, and Chandertal.


Renuka Wetland, Himachal Pradesh, holds the distinction of being India's smallest Ramsar site.


Solan in Himachal Pradesh is known as the Mushroom Capital of India.


Dharamshala is the Dalai Lama’s residence and the headquarters (HQ) of Central Tibetan Administration (the Tibetan government in exile) are in Dharamshala.
