Census 2027: Pragati and Vikas Mascots Unveiled - Expected Current Affairs 2026

These mascots will serve as communication ambassadors, helping spread awareness about the census process and encouraging public participation across communities.


Meaning Behind Pragati and Vikas


Pragati represents the female enumerator mascot, while Vikas represents the male enumerator mascot.


The mascots symbolize equal participation of women and men in nation-building and reflect the vision of inclusive development toward Viksit Bharat 2047.


World’s Largest Census Exercise


Census 2027 will be the world’s largest population enumeration exercise.


More than 30 lakh enumerators, supervisors and officials will participate in conducting the nationwide census operation.


India’s First Fully Digital Census


For the first time, the census will be conducted as a fully digital exercise.


Data will be collected using secure mobile applications and digital platforms, replacing traditional paper-based enumeration methods.


Self-Enumeration Facility


A Self-Enumeration Portal will allow citizens to submit household information online before the door-to-door survey.


The portal will support 16 languages, enabling wider participation across different regions.


Two-Phase Census Process


The census will follow a two-phase process.


Phase 1 – Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO): Collection of data on housing conditions and amenities.


Phase 2 – Population Enumeration (PE): Recording demographic, social and economic details.


Four Digital Platforms Introduced


Four major digital tools have been introduced for Census 2027 operations.


Houselisting Block Creator (HLBC): Web-based mapping tool using satellite imagery.


HLO Mobile Application: Offline mobile application for enumerators to collect field data.


Self-Enumeration Portal: Platform for citizens to submit census data online.


Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS): Real-time monitoring dashboard for administrators.


Caste Data in Population Enumeration


The Population Enumeration phase will include caste-related questions.


This data will play an important role in social policy planning and governance in India.
