Exercise DUSTLIK: India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Drill Explained - Expected Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The 7th edition of Exercise DUSTLIK (2026) marks a significant step in strengthening India–Uzbekistan defence cooperation. This annual joint military exercise enhances operational coordination, interoperability, and counter-terror capabilities between both nations.


What is Exercise DUSTLIK?


Exercise DUSTLIK is a bilateral military drill conducted annually between India and Uzbekistan since 2019. The exercise is held alternately in both countries, focusing on improving joint military preparedness. 


The term “Dustlik” means “friendship” in Uzbek, reflecting the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. 


7th Edition: Key Highlights (2026)


The 7th edition of Exercise DUSTLIK is being conducted from 12 to 25 April 2026 at Gurumsaray Field Training Area, Namangan (Uzbekistan). 


The exercise continues the tradition of annual joint drills, with the previous edition (2025) held in Pune, India. 


Participating Forces


The Indian contingent consists of 60 personnel, including:


  • 45 troops from a battalion of the MAHAR Regiment

  • 15 personnel from the Indian Air Force (IAF)


The Uzbekistan contingent also includes around 60 personnel from its Army and Air Force, ensuring balanced participation. 


Core Objectives of the Exercise


The primary aim is to enhance joint operational capability in semi-mountainous terrain.


Key focus areas include:


  • Joint planning and tactical drills

  • Physical endurance and combat readiness

  • Special arms and counter-terror operations


The exercise also promotes military cooperation and coordination between both nations. 


Operational Activities & Training Modules


The exercise includes high-intensity military training, such as:


  • Land navigation and reconnaissance

  • Strike missions on enemy bases

  • Seizure of enemy-held areas


A unified command-and-control structure is also developed for better joint mission execution. 


Counter-Terrorism & Special Operations Focus


A major highlight is the focus on counter-terror operations against unlawful armed groups.


The exercise culminates in a 48-hour validation phase, testing the preparedness and coordination of both forces in real-time scenarios.
