Indian space-tech startup GalaxEye launched the world’s first commercial OptoSAR satellite combining Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical imaging in a single payload. The satellite was launched aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 under the Transporter rideshare programme. GalaxEye became the first Indian private company to deploy integrated optical and SAR imaging technology in orbit.
Optical satellites capture detailed daytime images but face limitations during cloud cover and darkness. SAR technology uses microwave signals to generate images through clouds, smoke, rain, and nighttime conditions.
OptoSAR integrates both systems into one platform, improving accuracy for defence surveillance, disaster management, agriculture monitoring, maritime security, and infrastructure mapping. The technology reduces revisit gaps and enhances real-time geospatial intelligence.
GalaxEye originated from researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Madras and operates under India’s expanding private space ecosystem encouraged after the 2020 space sector reforms.
The mission supports India’s push toward indigenous geospatial capabilities and aligns with the objectives of Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center, which regulates private sector participation in space activities.
SAR satellites are strategically important because they provide persistent surveillance during adverse weather. Such systems are widely used for border monitoring, flood assessment, military reconnaissance, and ship tracking.
India’s space economy is projected to expand significantly under the Indian Space Policy 2023. Private startups including GalaxEye, Pixxel, and Skyroot are strengthening India’s commercial space and satellite manufacturing ecosystem.
