The Palk Strait lies between India and Sri Lanka, connecting the Bay of Bengal with the Gulf of Mannar. The route is globally known for strong currents, jellyfish presence, rough waves, and unpredictable weather conditions.

Ishank started the swim from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and reached Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu under the supervision of safety teams. The Sri Lankan Navy and Indian Coast Guard escorted the swimmer during the crossing

The previous record was reportedly held by a 10-year-old swimmer in 2019 with a timing of 10 hours 30 minutes. Ishank improved the timing by nearly 40 minutes despite difficult marine conditions.

Ishank Singh belongs to Ranchi, Jharkhand, and studies in Class 3. He reportedly began swimming training at the age of three and practised several hours daily before attempting the record swim.

The achievement was conducted under “Mission Samandar,” an open-water endurance initiative. Coaches Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar supervised his preparation and sea navigation strategy.

Open-water swimming differs from pool swimming because athletes face natural obstacles including tides, marine life, temperature variation, and navigation difficulties. The Palk Strait remains among South Asia’s toughest endurance swimming routes.

The achievement received national attention due to Ishank’s age and endurance capability. Several sports personalities and public figures praised the feat as a major milestone in Indian open-water swimming.
