The United States launched Project Freedom to restore freedom of navigation through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The operation focuses on escorting stranded commercial vessels through the maritime corridor.
The mission is being supported by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). Verified reports confirm deployment of guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms and nearly 15,000 service members.
According to verified sources, nearly 800 commercial vessels remained stranded in the Persian Gulf because of the ongoing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation aims to ensure safe passage for neutral merchant ships.
US President Donald Trump announced the initiative on 3 May 2026 and described it as a humanitarian effort for innocent commercial crews trapped due to regional tensions.
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is among the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints.
Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz following US and Israeli airstrikes. Subsequently, the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports after failed peace negotiations in Islamabad.
CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper stated that supporting the mission is essential for regional security and the global economy because a significant portion of global oil and fuel trade passes through the strait.
The operation also involves the newly announced Maritime Freedom Construct, an initiative designed for coordination and information sharing on maritime security between US departments and international partners.
