India and Russia are advancing negotiations on a $4 billion defence agreement to bolster India's air defence capabilities. Central to this deal is the acquisition of the cutting-edge Voronezh radar system, designed by Russia's Almaz-Antey Corporation, renowned for its expertise in radar and missile systems. Voronezh Radar Features:
Vertical Range: Over 8,000 kilometers.
Horizontal Range: Exceeds 6,000 kilometers.
Capabilities: Tracks multiple aerial threats, including ballistic missiles, stealth aircraft, fighter jets, and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
Tracking: Can monitor over 500 objects simultaneously, including near-Earth space objects.
The deal also supports India’s Make in India initiative, with provisions for at least 60% domestic manufacturing. Recently, a team from Almaz-Antey visited India to explore partnerships with local offset partners.
Upon acquisition, the radar system is expected to be deployed in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district, already a hub for advanced defence and aerospace projects.
Russia continues to be India's leading defence supplier, accounting for approximately 60–70% of India's military equipment.
