Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday (August 26, 2025) formally inducted two state-of-the-art Project 17A stealth frigates — INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri — into the Indian Navy at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
This marks the first occasion when two major surface warships built at two different Indian shipyards were commissioned together.
Both vessels have been designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and are now part of the Eastern Fleet, enhancing its combat strength.
INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, successors to the Project 17 Shivalik-class frigates, carry extensive upgrades in terms of design, stealth capability, weaponry, and sensor systems.
Equipped with modern combined diesel or gas propulsion technology (CODAG), an advanced Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and a wide range of indigenously developed weapons and sensors, these ships represent a significant step forward in India’s naval modernization drive.
