A lake is defined as a large water area that has land on all sides. Lakes are typically freshwater, but there are some cases where they can be filled with salt water. These wonderful lakes can be found in a variety of locations across the globe. In this article I have covered a completed list of lakes of the world along with some interesting facts associated with these beautiful lakes.   1. Baikal Lake ( freshwater ) situated in Russia is the deepest lake and the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world. Baikal lake, which is also the oldest lake in the world, is located in an active continental rift zone which even today continues to widen making this lake deeper every year by one inch.

  1. Lake Volta in Ghana, Africa is the largest manmade lake in the world by surface area. It is also the 4th largest in terms of volume. The size of Lake Volta spans 4 distinct regions in Ghana.

  1. Blue Lake is located in Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand. This is the clearest natural body of water known to human.

  1. Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake, which is the world's longest freshwater lake. It is also the second oldest freshwater, second largest by volume, and the second deepest lake in the world.

  1. Caspian Sea, bordered by Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, this is the largest lake in the world. It ( Caspian Sea ) is 5 times larger than its nearest rival that is lake Superior.

  1. Dead Sea also called Salt Sea bounded by Israel, Jordan and West Bank is the saltiest lake in the world. It is also the lowest lake in the world.

  1. The surface and shores of the Dead Sea are 423 metres below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest elevation on the land.

  1. The Great Lakes are located in North America on the border between Canada and the United States. They include five lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario [in the order of west to east]. Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario [In the order of largest to smallest]. Together they make up the largest freshwater lakes on earth.

  1. Lake Superior, located between Canada and the USA is the largest freshwater lake. This lake is fed by over 200 rivers and drains into Lake Huron. There are several islands in this lake and the largest is the Isle Royale, a national park.

  1. Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country (USA).

  1. The Land of the Thousand Lakes, Finland has over 187,000 lakes, giving the country the nickname of “The Land of the Thousands Lakes”.

  1. Lake Victoria, named after Queen Victoria by the explorer John Speke, this lake is the largest tropical lake and second largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Victoria is located in a shallow depression and is surrounded by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
