List of major deserts in the world
A desert is a barren area of land that receives less than 300mm of rain per year. There are four major types of deserts - hot and dry, semiarid, coastal, and cold. About one third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. The temperature during the day ranges around 38°C while at night it may fall as low as -4°C. They cover more than one fifth of the Earth’s land, and are found on every continent.

Sahara, Kalahari and Arabian deserts are such examples of Major deserts of World. These areas lose more moisture through evaporation than they receive from annual precipitation. Deserts have very low humidity but often contain large mineral deposits. It is worth mentioning that the desert can be found on every continent except Europe.

  1. Arabian Desert - Largest in Asia and the second largest hot desert on Earth.

  1. Atacama desert - South America, is the driest place on Earth

  1. Lut desert - Iran. The hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 70.7 °C (159 °F), which was taken in the Lut Desert of Iran

  1. Gobi Desert - China & Mongolia, Asia. The 2nd largest in Asia and the 5th largest in the world.

  1. Namib Desert - Namibia, Angola & South Africa, is the oldest desert in the world

  1. Syrian desert - Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, was formed by lava flows emanating from volcanic activities in the region of Jebel Druze in Syria

Some other large & important deserts include the Thar desert, India, the Kalahari Desert, Africa, the Patagonian Desert, South America, the Great Victoria, Gibson & Simpson Desert, Australia, the Syrian Desert, Middle East and the Great Basin Desert, North America, Dasht e Kavir and Dasht e Lut, Iran.
